About

When we say “Becoming Montevallo” it’s not only referring to an education but also to an experience.  Montevallo is a place where students receive practical preparation from highly qualified faculty who work closely with students in the classroom, on the performance stage, or in the field conducting research.  ”Becoming Montevallo” is receiving a personalized education on a campus rich in traditions dating over 100 years where both students and faculty develop a strong connection to campus.  Students graduate from Montevallo receiving a liberal arts education where they possess the ability to communicate effectively and think critically to solve problems facing today’s world.

Within these historic buildings is forward thinking teaching supported by state-of-the-art technology.  ”Becoming” is an English major having the opportunity to take part in a trans-Atlantic web lecture with British National Poet Laureate Sir Andrew Motion or an Education major getting to observe a teacher instructing a class in a distant state without ever having to leave campus. Montevallo students are receiving a practical education in a variety of scenarios.  The quality of instruction, small classes, and affordability is what makes Montevallo consistently recognized by U.S. News & World Report as Alabama’s highest ranked Master’s level public university.

As a member of the Council on Public Liberal Arts Colleges(COPLAC), Montevallo offers students a liberal arts education at a public university price.  Ninety percent of Montevallo faculty hold the highest degree obtainable in their discipline, a number significantly higher than most Southern universities. The University of Montevallo has had more faculty named by the Council for Advancement and Support of Education as CASE Professors of the Year than any other university in Alabama. Study abroad, undergraduate research, service learning, and community service opportunities provide another dimension to the Montevallo experience.

There is also the “experience of Montevallo”.  With over 150 student organizations and traditions such as College Night, getting plugged into campus life at Montevallo is easy and provides that perfect balance to academic life.  We have a variety of different residence halls, including our new apartment-style hall.  Whether it’s cheering on one of our 10 NCAA Division II athletic programs or competing in intramural flag football, you don’t have to look far to find ways to stay active. With our state-of-the-art McChesney Student Activity Center you can get a great workout, take advantage of the cardio theatre, or even take a yoga class.
